Adult Crassostrea gigas Staining Practices

Motivation and Project Description:

Calcein is a fluorescent dye commonly used to stain live cells and larval organisms including oysters and other organisms with calcium carbonate shells. Such staining can be an important means of marking time in organisms without consistent growth markers. Methods for staining such larval shells are well demonstrated, however little has been done to examine whether such methods work on adult organisms. This work seeks to determine best practices for staining adult oysters.

Current Status:

The field portion of this study was conducted in Summer 2019 and Winter 2020 in Netarts Bay, OR. The processing and analysis of samples is ongoing.
